Hi guys.. this may be a slew of little weird questions, maybe part "drawing board" part "studio a".. still, if you know the answers, this would help me a lot.
* In pro tools (or logic, cubase..) can you set control surfaces that work in increments of 8 (like the Mackie Control..) to work at specific bucket offsets, so that if you had multiple interfaces (say, three) could they work so that one MIDI port works from [1..8] second to [9..16] etc.? I understand this is the way people have their desks configured. Reaper can do this (see attached pic) with surface offset. What happens if you page up / down channels on one surface, do all 3 control surfaces page up / down or just the one that you pressed paging buttons on?
* Second, more important question, can the desks be set up to overlap, so, can you have two HUI or Mackie Control desks setup to show the same channels, say [1..8]? If you push the fader up on one, does it move on the other one simultaneously? Can you do this if you have different control surfaces, like C|24 and a Mackie Control? Just interested in panning and volume auto, though if you put both machines into plugin edit mode, does one update the other?
* In plugin edit mode, if you change a parameter of a plugin with automation, does the LCD of the control surface reflect the value changes in real time?
The idea here is to create a HUI or Mackie Control "listener" box that would do panning and volume automation by reading fader messages, do some basic 8-buss routing and insert on/off (via an optional plugin that is simple UI and values that the MCU/HUI emulator can "read"). The reason why not just simply intercept MIDI messages between a CS and the DAW is so that machines that use Ethernet and a custom protocol (like C|24, Eucon) would still work the same way.
Thanks!
