I think he was pleading for headroom. I'd bet the slammed traicks have a healthy dose of old fashioned cheap analog crunch.
Hopefully analog gear sounds the same regardless of level as long as you are between the noise floor and clipping. It often doesn't. I don't think it's designed in. The gear that sounds the same at all levels is a better design.
