New study shows average pay for US government workers roughly 2x average pay for private industry workers.  While government is showing precious little ability to wave their magic wand over double digit unemployment, and every time they raise minimum wages it just means less entry level jobs for new workers. If the government mandated higher pay for the private industry it would once again result in less jobs. In fact that is already going on with expansion of entitlements and expected tax burden to support same, making private industry afraid to hire new workers.

Since government workers are working for us, it seems fair that their average pay should track more closely with private sector pay. Does anybody think the typical government job is harder than what we do??? If the government workers improve the standard of living for the private sector, they would then get to share in their own rising pay scale. If they continue to drain life out of the economy, they should suffer too. Sounds like a good pay plan for congress too... maybe linked to how well their home district voters are doing, while this may have a amplifying effect on pork barrel ear marks.

Stop hating the "fat cat" bankers that Obama very publicly takes pot shots at (like on 60 minutes), while privately sharing tea and crumpets with them behind closed doors at the White House. You can't have it both ways. Bank regulators are leaning on the banks to improve their balance sheet capitalization ratios and improve loan portfolio quality, while the administration publicly demands more lending to small borrowers in a shaky economy, and more write downs of under water mortgages... You can't raise capital while giving it away to holders of worthless mortgage paper.

I suspect the public message is for political appearances and doesn't reveal the true thrust of federal policy.

That's just hit the headlines in the UK too John, seems like "Brown" has had to announce some
pay cuts and "civil servant" job losses are on the cards.

We have all suffered in the UK this year with pay "freezes" and my partner Anja ( who's a trained professional architects assistant )
has been on a 3 and 1/2 day paid week for over 6 months.
If the staff of BA insist on their course of action over xmas, we could see the end of BA, they would loose something
like 10 million £'s a day and they are on their knees already !!
Some people need to wake up and smell the coffee and realize that they are just "waitresses" in the sky !!
