As you can tell, I'm very curious about Scott Hampton's DIY-friendly designs - they seem like an inexpensive way to inject useful colors into my setup. In the July/August 2002 issue of Tape Op, he outlined a solder jockey-friendly tube pre that, as he noted at the time, could produce two channels for ~$400 (though I'm sure inflation factors in here). Has anyone built the project? Is it roughly as easy as the FETBoy appears to be? Is it worth building? While the FETBoy seems to have many happy builders and some documentation floating around, this tube precursor seems to have gotten the short shrift.
