I don't know about the US, but in Europe lead is banned from solder starting June 2006 - an EU directive known as ROHS. There are a few execptions though - mostly where the real environmental problems are :?

60/40 leaded solder will still be acceptable for repair jobs, as leadfree won't mix well with the classic stuff.
