Showed up as a loaner. there is nothing wrong with the mic. I have about 24 hours to disect it and make a schemo. Since it has to go back together I will not CJ this thing. There is a session on saturday that will be using the mic and my buddy was like well you got about 24 hours. So lets see some rushing to make it all happen. Of course I will be taking photos and such.

At first glance and without taking anything apart. We have a PSU that the power trafo is 6.3V @ .6 amps. It uses a mini tube(no brainer) and has a jensen Trafo for the mic in the PSU. A design he has used before in other DIY mics. That being the mic trafo away from the mic and in the PSU. There is no pad and the polar pattern switch is in the PSU.

The PSU is built into an old amo case. It runs via a 6 pin cable from the mic. More to follow as tonight I will get to take it apart on my bench. Since the holidays are comming I can catch up on some much needed DIY things including that westlake DI and such. I also might be able to get some exclusive pics of the famous mastering lab crossovers used in their mastering lab w/tannoy speakers that are now available from cj's GF, EVA at a much more expensive price. :green:

The tube is a 5840. hmmmm he used the same tube on his DIY projects. Jan 5840. there are a few caps and resistors in the miC. simple but crowded design and since nothing is labeled hard to tell which is which. But alk about no space.

Shit the mic had to go back for a session But I will get it again soon. I didn't have it very long but made some nice observations on the design. Tube is 5840 I already said that but will repeat. there are 2 resistors and a cap in the mic part with the Mic trafo in the power supply. Resistors are 22K and 1G one of each with the cap being 1microfarad @ 400V. The connector is a 6 pin but he is only using 5 pins total. maybe thats all he had lying around?

The power supply has 6.3 heater voltages and 125 Plate voltages or so thats what i read from the power trafo. There are a few caps and resitors in the unit and from what I could tell was doing half wave rectification but I could be wrong I didn't really have time to pull it completely apart. The mic trafo is a jensen as per stated in his other DIY designs.

The sound. The mic sounds good. It's warm and definately not as bright as a regular 414.

Yeah when I get ther mic again I will trace schemo's and boards. I started bnut didn't have enough time. The mic sounds great. On the other side where the daughter board were go he didn't put anything. If it were me I would have put the tube there as it would give a lil more space IMO. Aside from that the mic seems to be a combo of his DIY tape op tube mic designs. If it were really necessary one could piece a schemo from that.

if i had a spare 414 i would try a mod like that! they are great mics... i'm sure the capsules are pretty top notch.

a little photography tip to try next time - the "macro" setting (often shown with a flower icon) on your camera might allow you to get the closeups more in focus, and often prevents the flash "blow out" too...

Sounds to me like it has to be the CountryBoy circuit. 22k cathode R is lower than what I've seen in that design before. Maybe he is using seperate capsule polarization voltage, so the grid leak voltage could be lower and the cathode resistor could be smaller for lower output impedance. Is there a small capacitor between the capsule and the grid hiding in there?
