ATR 100 Alignment Question

I've got an ATR-102 with the 4-speed padnet board. The 4 speed includes a SHELF control on the record side alignment which I'm not quite sure how to properly adjust. The manual states to adjust this for the best MID BAND response. I've done playback alignment and the basic record side alignments with good results. I've put pink noise throught and tried to adjust the SHELF control, but I'm not 100% that I'm doing it correctly.

Does anyone have any tips for adjusting this control?

Or perhaps for aligning an ATR102 for optimal response.
