single stage or two stage 6SN7 tube  sounding very mid forward
compared to 12ax7 or 5751 etc...
ie: NYD's  6SN7 mic_pre

not that i am complaining about it, just wondered what is the reason behind it...

Try measuring the frequency response to see if there are any differences.

Cheers

hi kambo!

im building a nyd eq with daves pushpull 6sn7 tube amp design. and im having some harsh/fatigueing sound from it, even if i treat ringings and overshooting. im gonna try get a pair of vintage 6sn7´s and see if i get a more relaxed sound.

what tubes do you use?

Perhaps the same reasons I usually find 12AX7's spitty, grainy and with glare and treble sheen?  Possibly your first listen to an octal small signal tube?

You comment also reminds me of my first experience with a Neve full of 33114's and 33115's after using Mackie's.  Exactly the same experience.

i have bunch of different tubes, expensive vintage to cheap ones...
i work with cheap ones, once the circuit working properly, i switch to vintage ones...
1950 Sylvania's sounds really creamy and  smooth...
but if ur circuit sounding harsh, 1950 Sylvania it aint gonna cure it!

i have one set of matched pair mic. i record two channel with it, with two different mic_pres...
didnt pay attention to which order i listen....
on DAW i press play and solo a channel at a time while listening...

that exactly it :)
but i thought they both have flat response tho ! ?

They do all have flat response.  It's about the harmonic spread.

that was my guess too, now its confirmed! thank you  :)

can we say harmonic spread is equal to even and odd harmonic distortion spread?
even the THD is very low
