One third rack size question
« on: June 02, 2018, 06:12:09 AM »
Hi all!

I'm designing a 1/3 rack size case. The case height is 42mm with the cover included. My question is if It is usual to mantain the front panel height the same 42mm, because most 1/3 rack size hear may be installed within a 19" 1u height tray.

Thanks for your advise!

Hello Jay x,

you should maintain the standard height,in your case it is 1ru (1,75 inches or 44,45 millimeters).
The main cause is to give your unit(s) a bit of clearance for putting it in and to remove from your (studio)-racks easily.
Also sometimes screws and feet exceed the height of the housing behind the panel.
If you want to dive in deeper you can find all the infos in the internet, they are based on technical standards for a good compatibility.

Hope to have helped,

Udo.

Hi Udo!

I understand what you mean, but i was reffering to the device to be racked itself, that should be smaller in height size than the shelf...and here are my doubts... : for example i have a front panel with an height of 43,6 mm and another with 42mm, because most 1u rack shelves are made of 1,5mm thick steel. So Maybe the best decision is to mantain the front panel the exact same height of the device...but i was doubting... :P

Hi All!

Given tha fact that the case is made of 1mm sheet of galvanized steel,
┬┐What do you think about using this type of screw to close the case in the sides? :

The other option is to use rivets: This one is M4 size... i would use M3 instead...

Thanks for your comments!
