Hi,
It looks like there's a discount on this mic : it's only 29$ and could be a good donor mic : http://www.pssl.com/MXL-MCA-SP1-Large-Studio-Condenser-Microphone
Anyone familiar with this mic ?

I'd say that's a "maybe" ;)

Well, a 70% discount from an inflated "list price" isn't necessarily meaningful ;D But what do i know? :p

Then again, that also depends on your definition of "donor". Is it just the body? Or do you hope to reuse (some of) the electronics too?

Even cheaper would be the chinese BM700 / BM800 mics. If you do a bit of digging / scrolling, you'll find plenty that come with actual shockmounts for half that (discounted) price :) And for a couple bucks more, "even" ones with metal shockmounts.

Oh, so then both Mr Spragens and myself have somehow bent or broken the laws of physics? ;D

Jokes aside, no they're not :) As you can see in the photos on my blog, there's plenty of room for a large-diaphragm capsule in there.
I've got a thread in here as well about that, but it's a bit less... "tidy".

It's basically a 990 in a 2001 body IIRC. Basically it's a transformless linear Schoeps style circuit with a small diaphragm capsule which is a copy of a Neumann style capsule. The capsules need corrective EQ though so the mics can he pretty harsh. $29 isn't bad though, but if you're not doing DIY it would be a bad purchase IMO, especially with the linear circuit. You could probably do a mod with a K47 style capsule or a decent C12 style, but that's about it. If you build a new PCB though then you have a lot more options.
