hi there,

my beloved AMS DMS 15-80S might need a new replacement toroidal power transformer soon.
I've found David Kulka offering them through his shop and eBay at a quite hefty price tag of $400.
Since I live in the EU anyways and don't want to spend 400USD + shipping for a toroidal, I was wondering if there is any alternative.
If there's nothing on the market that could fit, maybe a custom winded via Multi-CB is an option?

I just don't know exactly the values that I should type it. Regarding power transformers I never was super skilled and always very cautios and wary.

Any help is highly appreciated :)

Hello Echoplex,

As you 're in Europe you can try to contact Audiophonics in France to build you a custom power transformer.
I have ordered several types of custom toroïdals from them in the past, and they worked perfectly.
For your AMS it will not cost you $400,00 !  ;)

Best,

or Canterbury Windings in England come highly recommended - they do fantastic work. I'm in the same boat myself right now actually. I think the orignals are under spec'ed and that's why i dont think i would get a replacement 'spec' transformer ... they seem prone to failure. I'm going to bit the bullet and start unwinding mine later today and have  a look to see if i can't do it myself though

Davids transformer is different from the original, and includes a winding tap for the fan so it runs slowly. Getting a complex transformer rewound as a special is expensive, and if you dont spec it correctly it can still fail.

$400 for a replacement transformer is crazy,
I would never pay that amount

For that I preffer to have 2 transformers to replace the original one.

Whats the problem with your original transformer?
I have a local rewind company that rewinds toroidal transformers for an affordable price,
may I can help you out

pm me

Whoops have you had a look inside a DMX? You wont fit two transformers in there.
You could put them in an external box of course, like this guy did!

yes I was thinking something along those lines. Putting a transformer or 2 in an external box would not be a problem for me.
But I really wouldnt pay $400 myself.

Anyway, I would try to have it rewind

thanks
