I haven't build any of those... As I said, I would like to build an LA-4A befor going to LA-3 and 2A... that way I will going getting in the Urei optos world. I did build something like 1176 but with ICs, something like 1178 if you prefer, it was for my guitar, so no fancy flavor, the AC15 I've build a couple of years ago have all the flavor I'd possibly want.

Go for the 1176, it will be more usefull and nice for first heavy project, too much documentation about... A friend is building one with IC's input, (Gyraf's) when he finish I tell you how it sounds.

Wonderful,

I will go for 1176 Rev A and probable get something from Hairball audio.
Can anyone talk about the transfromers? Gyraf uses Lundahl .

What would be best, i like colour. and vintage is good :)

Originals used UTC O-12 and you can get them pretty cheap. There's one for sale in the bm right now.
I used O-12s in the three 1176s I've built. A pair of rev D and a rev A

I love the hairball rev A on vocals, and it's amazing on acoustic gtrs, elec gtrs and snare.  Especially for pop/rock vocals that need to cut through a track  8) 8)

It was my first ever diy build, and it was a great first project.

That's good to hear Greg, one more reason for the Rev A.

Hairball audio suggested that i can't go wrong with a revision D.

Is your Rev A noisy? Which kit did you build and what transformers did you use?
How is the sound if not compressed, just running a vocal through, do you get a colour to it? is it very transparent?

I appreciate if you could answer those questions.

who sells the best parts bag for stuffing a pair of D boards?

lots of transistor and fet choices,

what kind of transistors are you freaks using?

toshiba sk170 , 2n666?

i need this for the drums right away, La2a no good on kick, LDR does not reset fast enuff,

I built the 1176 with all mouser parts using the provided bom.  And all hairball transformers.  It sounds really great on snare but I don't use 1176s on kick.  i could be totally wrong, For some reason that circuit doesn't have the  biggest low end, IMHO.  That s-l 4000 dynamics 500 series module that Igor has is what I want to use for kick.  That original s-l circuit rocks on kick, IMHO!!!!! Currently I use the original dbx160s on kick, they're cheap and sound awesome.  I wonder if you can DIY those??  A really good vocal sound is the 1176 going into the la2a on limit.

The rev a noise level is totally manageable except for maybe classical music?  I love how it crunches if you push it!!  I'd like to build a rev d model to hear the difference!!

Fun stuff

Reopening the topic :

I decided i will be diy either the revision D or the g1176.
Now it seems it would make sense to get the kit from hairball audio for the revision d though people really enjoy the OEP tranns for their 1176.

My final question is : g1176 with OEP or hairball Rev D?

The g1176 would be cheaper but how much cheaper?
Who makes a good case for the g1176 in europe?
Where to source the matched FET?

Thank you already for all your help,
M

Hairball has the matched FET's on his website, & all the transformers needed for various 1176 versions & bill of materials with store codes. And cases & meters & switches ...............................!  :D And probably other stuff that I can't think of right now!

Just get a kit & make your build less complicated!!!!
