i've just been discussing this circuit with my father (30+ years electronics engineer), could you clarify your schematic if poss. show where the lines join or cross clearer?

#1 on the FAQ - guess I didn't fix that particular one. The lines connect at that point.

And yes, it's for 48v phantom to 12v on the capsule. Put in a lower-voltage zener and decrease the value of the 5k6 resistors if you want a lower capsule voltage.
