I like the SM57 for guitar amps and snare drums (and I guess I'm in the majority in that respect); but like you, I never understood the appeal of the Tube Screamer. I owned one for a little while and I was unimpressed. I thought it was a crappy-sounding pedal with not enough gain for its intended purpose.

Quite often I go back to close miking male vocals with an SM57. Many, many times I've prefered the sound I get from a 57 over a U87. There's a certain presence that really sits well sometimes. The 58 however, I don't like at all. I guess I'm in the minority once again for not liking 57s on the snare. I usually opt for a large diaphram condenser IF the drummer is good, if not, the 57 goes there.

I always think people who don't like the '57 just don't have the right preamp.....;-)
Vocals, guitars, xylophone, flute, violin, drum overheads....all sound lovely with the '57 and the right pre.

Anyway, again I ask is there any mileage in replacing the tranny?
