Not sure how accurate / relevant it is, but some googling revealed this (page 5, timeline on the right, 1966)

So we know it goes up into the ultrasonics, but it would be interesting to know how low it (also) goes :p
 
It wouldn't be - believe me :)
Ultrasonic transducers - any type - aren't completely usable in audio frequency range which interest us all here.
 
Depending on the type and application.
There are various type starting from piezoelectric and magnetostrictive as basic.
If you want to make a music for dolphins or at least dogs - you can be the new market leader :D
