I have had several issues where replacing a dead 74xx package didn't help at all, until I dropped in one from a batch close to the original (!!).

Do NOT expect just any chip family to work, even if "100% compatible" in theory

well that's quite interesting Jakob ...thanks and very good to know! I was thinking of ordering some 'new' 74xx chips for the D/A boards 'just because' but maybe i'll wait to see if there are any problems passing audio when i fire it up.
