Or does the circuit "expect" a capsule to be one or the other (with FET or without)?

I have a friend who knows more about this stuff who just said "Just try it and see if it works."

We can do better.

Absolutely not! An electret capsule needs a FET (or a tube) configured as an impedance converter.

If the capsule has an internal FET, it already has an impedance converter, and just needs the required passive parts to bias the FET properly.

Thanks, that's what I figured, but got tripped up when I was reading about a circuit that's compatible with either and got to thinking (is this normal?). So much to learn, and I appreciate the help with the dumb questions. I know they can get annoying but it's good karma.

But you can usualy mod a circuit to exclude the fet and use the one within the capsule, or sometimes even get rid of the fet within the capsule if you know how, and if capsule allows it.
