B16 cutting tape while rewinding

It is most likely the tape and not the machine. The tape slitting is not accurate. This was usually more of a problem with Ampex than AGFA or others. That said it doesn’t really hurt anything. After a few passes the tape will usually conform.
 
tape shedding is no bueno but it is common. Assuming the tape path alignment it good, then the tape it self might not be cut correctly. When some of the new brands of tape came out, We got one brand as a test real to see what was what. For the first minute of tape I couldn't get squat of a steady 1K tone on there while printing an alignment tone. It was flickering back and forth and not steady at all. Went over the tape path over and over on the Studer the studio had, and everything was checking out. After a minute, the tones were rock solid. they hit 0VU and stayed perfectly at 0VU. No wobbling or anything. Further inspection revealed the tape not cut correctly to width for the first minute of tape. it was just enough off so that the tape could rock up and down in the guide rollers.
