Yup, in the old days all mics were called "transmitters" looks like the 4014-B(?)  is the model number, the small number hand punched at the end is probably a serial number.

Definitely a single or double button carbon microphone from the very early days of radio.
It was suspended in a ring by springs attached to the ring and the eyelets around the circumference of the microphone.
It required a dc supply to make it function.
Sounded like a '40s telephone.

Thanks a million for the replies. Would anyone have any suggestions on how to wire this up or is it even possible to get old parts to try restoring this?

Regards

I think a 600CT:10K, even 600CT:2K, would be a better fit to lo-Z inputs.
