I'm building an 8 channel preamp, and always liked the idea of optical adat A/D.

I don't know much (anything) about digital converters, but I had an idea that might work. Could I buy an A/D expansion card like the Focusrite Octopre Digital Expansion Card ? It adds conversion to an otherwise all analog 8 channel pre, so... would it work on my pre?

If anyone has experience with this I think it would be a great addition to a lot of peoples projects around here. 8 channels of A/D up to 192k for $200, and it doesn't have to say Beh*ringer on the front.

i dont' see why not, no manufacturer would put ADC's on a board and not link them out...

i haven't seen these boards myself, but common sense hints that the ADC's and S/PDIF/ADAT devices are onboard.

cheers

I would like to buy it and put it into the 8 ch SSL pre I racked (4 SSL 615E dual mic preamp modules) but I'm worried I will encounter the same problems people had when trying to bypass the b*h*rin*ger pre's in the ADA8K, with volume levels way too high for the A/D to handle..... Also, word clock external/internal switching might get tricky.....

Bumping up this ancient thread.

Has anyone had any success with these and/or have schematics for the "Octo" (the pre and/or the ADAT option) to figure out how to back-end a DIY 8-way preamp with one of these guys?

Seems all you need to know are the connector pinouts and the power and audio level/impedance characteristics.
