hi, caps for my 1176 clone, i am getting revox and panasonic from rs, but they have to be in multiples and its getting very pricey. Maplin do lots but are unbranded, how much will this change the quality of sound in the 1176. Also i cant get a ceramic 33pf, what else can i use.
also i have a vu meter and do not know if it is suitable, how can i find out and what do i need to find out.
cheers

please can anyone help as this is something i cannot find in the meta threads, i understand better caps work in some projects but can work out if it is the case in this one, i.e can the power caps be any quality and the caps in the audio path be the hi quality ones.
cheers

never done a 1176,but the caps i use,nichicon pw,or pana fc(electro).
both digikey uk.
as for the ceramic 33 pf,try cog/npo.digikey has them,i guess.
if you look at the meta, there are folks around here with very good opinions about this(soundguy dave and others).
best regards

I would generally make sure that you have decent quality capacitors on the signal path.

Other than that, I wouldn't worry too much.

I would try and avoid Maplin, although sometimes they can be handy.

Again, search and use the Metas.

hi, i always use the meta's, practicly live in them. I am always doing the searches, not everything on here is explained in black white or yes and know so sometimes i need to ask to be clear. Rather get this baby right first time than trying to pull my hair out to fix what i have built. Cheers for the help, never forgotten and always appreciated.

I have two boards 1176 myself and plan to stuff with panasonic, sanyo, Elna or bc for the signal path electros.
the ceramics i use normally are tested cog types mostly out of audio street junk...( don't be offended, i use hifi caps all the time, out of cd player psu's, broken synths etc after individual testing. OK, you never know what you get, but if i built it, i can repair it... i try to ensure that the cannibalized units are not that old if i plan to use the caps, especially the electro's...)

I built all of my G1176 with different branded cheap-o-lytics and I definitely love the sound of each unit. For my ****** up ears there is barely a difference. It´s more a question of using a tranny on the input or not and which trannies you use at all. But since you don´t know the result of either way in advance why do you care.
Built a cheap one and listen to it. If there´s somthing to complain about you still have the choice to mod it.

Nichicon HE series are the best i have ever used.
33pf is a common value, you might get away with 22pf or 47pf depending on the circuit they are used in.

From Farnell:

those are the ones i use here in the states. good caps.

i think that the most important thing about electros,it`s low impedance, and 105 degree.other than that........ i just don`t know.
