They will probably work.

They are way too cheap to be true VU meters. Expect some calibration error on tones, and slow sloppy dynamics on speech/music.

On the other hand, for prototyping, they can be front-mounted in a very small hole (because they use a teeny mechanism behind a large face). So if you try it and want something better, you can enlarge the hole for a proper meter, which is easier than shrinking a hole.
 
This one:

is a cheap modutec. They come with external rectifiers and series resistors, all sealed in a "blob".

I have one, and they're not good at all. Certainly, for prototyping, they're okay, but don't invest any metalwork decisions or committments into one. Fir $25 you can probably get an AL series meter form sifam that comprehensively wipes the floor with this modutec, performance-wise.

There is an SEW meter from some of the budget suppliers that may be an option.

AT Radio Parts here in Melbourne, about a year ago, I think I paid $25 to $28 and I think that included GST.
