2vca = 3dB better. 4 vca=6dB better 8 vca 9dB better (i think 9 and not 12)
maybe its 6dB per doubling instead of 3.. which would mean, 6dB for 2, 12dB for 4, (18 or 24)dB for 8.
other reasons.... dunno probably some very valid reasons for it, especially when these were designed.
there is probably some harmonic distortion that factors into the equation
