I've got an HA-100 here with a dead secondary.  Don't know if the windings are broken somewhere on the bobbin, or if (more likely, I hope) the pins have been soldered and unsoldered so many times over the years that the magnet wire has somehow become disconnected, or broken away from the pin(s).

Some of the pins are actually loose.

When I tap the pinboard with my fingernail it sounds hollow underneath.  Is there a way to remove the pinboard without damaging the case of the transformer?  I'm hoping the magnet wire is sitting beneath this cover and can be resoldered to get this working again.  Ideally I don't want to destroy the pinboard either, but would be alright converting to flying leads so long as I can salvage the actual transformer itself.

Thoughts?

Or does anyone know who could save this transformer for me?

Thanks!

JC

hope you get this worked out JC.

where is CJ?  he has popped in a couple of times this year.
maybe PM either CJ or Ed Anderson.  either would surely know how to deal with that xfrmr.

best,

most likely the leads to the terminal lugs

when you hook it up,  the old cloth wires develop tension due to insl shrinkage

so when you solder, they pull out of the terms

simply drill the pem nuts,

pull the plate back caefull and resolder

CJ!!!!  Great to hear from you!

Upon closer inspection it does appear that the pem nuts hold the plate on.  I'll carefully drill them out and try to get under the board for a fix.  This will be a lovely input for my LA-2A, assuming I can get it working properly again.

And yes, Grant, I'll take some pics of the process to share!  ;D

you guys are still alive, amazing,

i still am working on v72 from jensenman

so dont call the fbi just yet

Thanks for the direction, CJ.  Unfortunately, after removing all the secondary wires from the pins (7, 8, 9, and 10) there seem to be no continuity between any of them (7 and 9 is one winding, 8 and 10 the other, and none have continuity).

Don't know what must have happened to this thing, but it does seem quite dead.  :'(

CJ, you've been inside the HA-100 and their kin before.  Any chance you could be persuaded to do a rewind?  Pretty please?  ;)

did it smell liked cooked windings in there?

at this point, you have nothing to lose by heating the can up, removing the black tar, and un wrapping the outer wrapper and tape,

the pri is wound first, then sec, no interleaving,

there are rivets that connect the tiny magnet wire to the big leads,

all windings are bad?

did you try it in circuit?

certain digital voltmeters go haywire when testing transformers, something to do with the massive inductance, 40 to 120 henries across the whiole winding

use an old simpson or triplett if you have one  and see if you get different readings,

or try a inductance meter

sorry but no way to rewind,

they have dual pies, side by side, utc was the best at 2 pie construction, very hard with small wires

jensen 10K is a good input, stick it in the 100 x can you get xtra shielding and better sound than the 100 x

are you saying you were trapped in there covered by an avalanche of old trannies and toobs! ;D
yeah, gotta get analog packrat down there too.

sounds like good advice.

yeah!  been missing a good 'ol CJ-type hackjob.  don't know if many round here have seen that kind of destruction except for us "old folks".  do it JC!
