did it smell liked cooked windings in there?

at this point, you have nothing to lose by heating the can up, removing the black tar, and un wrapping the outer wrapper and tape,

the pri is wound first, then sec, no interleaving,

there are rivets that connect the tiny magnet wire to the big leads,

all windings are bad?

did you try it in circuit?

certain digital voltmeters go haywire when testing transformers, something to do with the massive inductance, 40 to 120 henries across the whiole winding

use an old simpson or triplett if you have one  and see if you get different readings,

or try a inductance meter

No smell of anything cooked.  I actually have two of these with issues (and a third that is perfect).  This one has both secondary windings open, another has one secondary winding open.

Yes, tried one of the bad ones in circuit -- pretty much didn't pass the signal.

So what do I melt the tar with?  Just put in a pot of boiling water (waterline below the top of the can) and wait for it to melt?  Gotta say, I'm intrigued!  ???

What usually is the culprit for such open windings, BTW?

JC

PS -- any resulting carnage shall be photographically documented for sharing here!  ;)

the wire is thin and old, kinda like granny, 40, 50, 60 yr old they are, small wire easy to break,

what vintage are these?

black, dark gray, light gray or green/blue?

These were taken from a mid-late 1940's Gates console.  No UTC badges, and repainted and stamped with Gates part number, but I have since learned that they're UTC HA-100's.

So yes, they're old.

So boiling water?  I'd rather not damage the case.

good question

needs testing

what about insertion loss?

all that hi perm mu metal sucks some flux out of the core?

needs testing,

utc has all these answers, along with western electric,
imagine the data lost due to company secrets,

i want the WE files!

I might still be able to fix it.  I might not.

If you must pry it out for a stare, put it in the oven for 20 minutes at 210 degrees F.  Tar will melt, and you can pull it out.  Boiling water sounds like a real bad idea.
