People used to DIY degaussing coils for TV sets. The general principle of a tape head demagnetizer is the same, but I've never heard of anyone building his own because they've been easy to get and inexpensive for as long as I can remember. A good brand to look for is "Han-D-Mag." Han-D-Mags are expensive new, but you can find used ones at reasonable prices.

What I did in my youth is use an ordinary electromagnet, powered by a small AC voltage... like 12VAC, then put it near my cassette tape head and wave it back and forth and slowly pull it away from the tape head with the AC power still on. Don't turn off the AC power while the electromagnet is still near the tape head.

Thanks, it was just a thought. I'll look for a real thing first, though an electromagnet with 12VAC doesn't sound too bad.

Or maybe I should just make the electromagnet from a 1 meter steel bar, hang it from the roof and power it with 2kV. No need to get up from your chair to demagnetize.
