Just chiming in to say trying to get SRV and distorted metal tones from the same amp is probably too optimistic. Different gain staging, topologies, speaker cabinets, etc. I would suggest focusing on one or the other, or just build two amps.
For something different, that doesn't really fit either category, the various Trainwreck type builds can be great. Minimal parts so each component tends to make a more noticeable difference.
