Yes, there are differences:
- Wire gauge is much finer making hand winding difficult.
- Winding techniques are different for best bandwidth. Good luck figuring that one out!
- The lamination alloys are more exotic and more expensive than M6 lams for many output transformers. Difficult to source in small quatities.
- Mu-metal casing is expensive and difficult to source in small quantities
After checking into pricing on lamination and mu-enclosure I decided that $28 for an OEP or $30 for a JLM transformer is an outstanding deal. And a Cinemag for $50 is outright a steal.
Perhaps, as a group order it could prove to be worth doing, like a 100 piece quatity thing. As always good design would be paramount for its success. A low turns ratio like 1:2 transformer might be the palce to start.
