...I doubt it would have off-tape monitoring. Check to see if there is a switch labelled "tape/source" or "line/tape". Because it is a domestic machine, they usually don't have this monitor facility. Also the speeds of these domestic machines are usually only 1-7/8ips and 3-3/4 ips. So you'll get pretty long delays depending on the head spacing, and the sound will be quite "dark" depending on tape speed. Something like a Revox A77 will do the trick (you may be able to pick up a 2nd hand one for £100 if you're lucky) They do 3-3/4 and 7-1/2 ips. You can also do a mod to varispeed them. I use an old Ferrograph for insane tape delay with the capstan fed from a variable f AC source- function generator feeding a 100V line power amp via a transformer :green: ...

Tape delay is cool!

okay, been fishing about and can get hold of an A77 for 80 notes but it needs some attention...apparently it runs fine but wont stop... is that a simple fix of the stop button of would it mean something deeper?

Cheers :thumb:

If you want it for a tape delay it is not necessary to stop. Infinite loop. :green: :green: :green:

apparently the plastic tape holders are broken off too - are these easily obtainable / cheap / pricey...?

Hmm...

It looks a bit used...the transport control and capstan drive is all pretty easy to sort out, but the spool pegs on the turntables are a problem- ironically it would probably be best to get two junked A77's and put them together to make a good 'un. Is it a two or four track model (the 2-track means you only get one side of tape but with better quality, the 4-track model has narrower track widths and allows you to swap the tape over for "A" and "B" sides- i.e. 2 stereo tracks)

I can only recommend that you put a "wanted" in the Black Market for A77 spares, or look on evilbay...

They are cool machines, but you'll get a better one for a better price if you shop around...

For the attention of New York Dave,

i am 39, so NEARLY 40, not sure if this counts, i still mix to 1/4" every day . . . If I had a 16 track 2" I'd use it for drums/Bass/Gtrs/ every day too, but only at 15ips . . i am ashamed to admit that we have an Otari MTR90 24tr 2", and I haven't even turned it on in 9 months. It is just TOO SLOW in the age of Logic/Protools. Sigh!

For anyone else interested in tape delay, why not buy a slow speed 1/4" machine(3 3/4ips or even better 1 7/8"ips) with varispeed. They are very cheep, and so much fun. There are loads of ex-broadcast machines around, most of which will go on for ever, especially if you want crappy sounding tape delays. i always randomly line-up the machine - especially the bias - for Screwed up tape delay fx. For "Original" loop fx, record your loop, edit accurately. and literally make a loop, running with pencil(s) to maintain correct tape tension?(some machines are not happy with take-up spools spinnings tho') nothing sounds as cool as this to me, PLUS you envolve bands/musicians in something"organic" - they love this!

For Ultimate Cudos, try Real 60's Tape-Phase for size . . . . you need two machines with identical head-gap for this, one with varispeed . . . pm me for details, cos I am too tired now to explain . . .
