Does this rubber part have an acoustic function?

Hi folks, I have these catridges from old Beyer wireless microphones and am wondering what function this rubber part has? I'm going to cut it off for space reasons, I don't think there's anything wrong with that, right?

Possible, I never saw the whole microphone, I only got the capsule separated from the body. It was a gift.
