The BBC has a great R&D site.

for those with ported monitors, i recall putting acoustic foam in the ports to tame the out of proportion lo-end.
This cleans up a lot, especially when the room is not yet in perfect condition. Don't block the hole complete, just reduce the airflow.

One more vote for the BM6A. I worked and had many type of monitors from NS10, EVENT, JBL, to TANNOY, GENELEC and DYNAUDIO [even now I have four diferent types] and the BM6A are the ones I like the most. I think they are the best price/quality/performance rate up to 2000$.
If I would like something more acurate, probably it would be ADAM.

i checked out the (expensive too!) ADAMS but found the highs weird. Very sweet indeed, but weird. :?
A friend has them in his studio and is still learning them after 3 months of experience... They also seem to have a strange sweetspot to my ears, i mean in the horizontal plane here... Moving the chair up or down by about 10 cm made the reference close to useless or brilliant, although this could be the studiofurniture reflections having a roll in it. Cold somebody who works with them check this out? It could help to improve me mates room

SPEAKERS SHOULD NEVER BE USED IN HORIZONTAL PLANE!
It is totally wrong. The two or three speakers [depending it is two way or three way monitor] should be on the vertical plane to have a right stereo image.
