Eventide H3000SX/D makes a hell of a noise /problem

A friend of mine has an Eventide H3000 which starts to make noise randomly.
First in the background , then it gets louder and louder.
He describes it as pink/white noise.
Anyone ?

I've run across similar problems with 3000s "of a certain age". The converters can get noisy after so many years of work. PCM 54, or maybe 53, I'm not sure. I just saw a site that carried the 54s for a reasonable price, http://www.audiochips.net/?action=bb

I had a similar problem. A bad crystal was it.
