Hi Folks -

Looking for a little help. I am working on a Garnet Banshee tube amplifier. I want to replace the diodes in the power supply, the leads are coming up just a little short for the new filter capacitors I'm putting in and they seem a little brittle and I'm just not feeling confident in them.

I'm having a look at the schematic and unsure what the diodes are there are in there to begin with.  What are the considerations for choosing replacement diodes? Will any 800 V, 1A diode work as any other?

Thanks so much - you dudes are the best.

Here's the schematic:

Hey Folks - Another question on this amp.

Looking at the filter section on the schematic - there are two resistors noted on the circuit there - one at 1,000 Ω and another written on the schematic at 10,000K Ω - which seems like a really large value to me - is it possible/probable that the value for that resistor should be 10K Ω.  The old can cap that would have had those resistors soldered across the lugs was turfed a long time ago so nothing for me to reference there.

Thanks again for the help.

Kindly,

Gus

I think the "k" is a typo. Assuming you're pulling about 45mA total from the first two taps (total guesstimate, but seems reasonable), a 10k resistor in the last RC filter would put you right about 297 V on C (which also assumes a 50k load from the plate resistors of the two triodes).  Don't go off of my quick and possibly flawed math, but a 10M (10,000k) resistor doesn't get you anywhere near the 295 V value you need after the filters. 10k seems about right.

Typo.

Gar did not have a large engineering department cross-checking his documentation. (We are lucky he did not keep it all in his head.)

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the help. I finally got around to finishing up this amp over the weekend and it sounds awesome.  My father got the amp new when he was about 14 years old and my brother took it apart when he was about 14 - about 24 years ago.  My old man was pretty chuffed to hear that it was working again. I'm going to drop it off to him later in the week.

Write to the family (better: have Dad do it); I think they would appreciate hearing the story. http://www.garnetamps.com/

I happened to order Gar's book a few days before he passed. The order was delayed, though I did hear of his passing so I was patient. With the book I got a note from the family member handling the estate saying they were pleased how many people remembered Gar's work.
