I want to add a rectangular cutout to a prexisting Gerber file, for an API2503 transformer. Dont have a pcb software file like Eagle or Protel, just the gerbers. I have someone who can do the editing but we are unsure which file to edit.

Is it outline, drill or is there a separate file for internal routs? Ive asked this once before but havent come to a definitive answer.

Thanks

I would guess outline or separate file. The drill files contain only coordinates of round holes. But I can't help you further. I normally make a lot of 1.3mm holes around the outline of the part I want cutout - that's cheaper

Talked to gabe at Sierra Proto. He said the cutout can be in the outline file but that many people just specify the exact size of the rectangle and coordinates of where they want it on the board. I left a blank rectangle inside a large copper field on the bottom layer that makes it obvious where the cutout is. They said that they could work from that too.

Normally, the cutout is drawn on all layers. I use Ecam350 to edit gerbers.
If you want to send them to me with a sketch of where you want the cutout,
I'll be glad to do it for you. Keep in mind, you don?t want the
copper to go right to the edge of the cutout. Your PCB shop will route
the opening and they don't like to hit copper with their router.
About .015 pullback is usually good. Also you must show
dimensions and tolerances for each cut out..
