Good cheap output transformer (balanced out) for a 12au7 tube pre final stage?

I’m afraid we might need a little more information.

is this to replace active-balanced circuitry in an existing device, part of a new design, or something else?

Do you have a schematic you can share?

also, what price range would you characterize as “cheap”?

I built this one that is ef86>12au7 Tablebeast Modified Akai / Roberts Tube Reel Monoblock Amps - Gearspace.com

Jesse (tablebeast) who drew up that schematic mentions somewhere a good 4:1 Edcor that is not expensive. I have a VTB2291 Carnhill in there (Is that it? The one that can be wired 4:1, ungapped, big steel core, either 2291 or 2281)

Anyhow, the unbalanced output of that circuit is great. I don't prefer the sound of the carnhill to unbalanced, but sometimes you need to drive 600 ohms and/or make a long run . . .

Sounds like some good suggestions. This is to be used as a mic pre. Just a basic 12AX7 to 12AU7 circuit (I'd been using it for guitar in front of a power amp, but I like it as a preamp for vocals too). It would be better with a transformer I believe. I like the compression, LPF and slight distortion of a transformer.
