Hey All!

I have a question concerning the GSSL project and Iam pretty sure you all will be able to assist quite easily.

I would like to avoid the tantalum capacitors in there.

What should I go for ?
- Low ESR electrolyte ?
- multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) ?
- foil cap ?
- ...

any other advice/recommendation ?

Thank you in advance!

Jonas

The tantalums are only in the ATT and REL timing network. Some say tants are particularly good for that application.

It depends entirely on the capacitor's value and what it's doing in the circuit. I don't know the GSSL circuit so I can't tell you, but other dielectrics would usually be physically a lot larger than electrolytic - often too large to fit.

There may be other factors at play here too, as Jakob's schematic for the GSSL specifies tantalum in those positions. I remember JR noting that they can behave slightly differently from other types in timing circuits.
