They drilled and engraved it. Yes, it was US 30, and about 25 of that was the engraving. The drilling is very cheap.

thanks for the knob info greg.

just read re your THAT2180 order.
did you get the 2180LA and are you going to have any spare. id ideally like 5 if you had them (and would put in a jiffy to the UK, ill cover costs) though a minimum of 3 would be fine if that was all that was spare.

I didn't get the 2180LA, I ordered the 2180LB... I should have some extras. When I get them in I'll email you and we can work it out if your interested.

I've completely finished both G4000s.

G4000 #1 uses WIMA polypropelene and Nichicon lytics with DBX 202 VCAs.

G4000 #2 uses Panasonic polyesters and Panasonic FC lytics with THAT 2180LBs.

I did some A/B comparisons yesterday at my studio, and they sound significantly different. G4000 #2 has much brighter top end and a very mid scooped sound (which I'm not a huge fan off), and G4000 #1 is much more focused and rich in the midrange. I put them both on a stereo overhead pair and the drum buss, and in both applications I felt G4000 #1 had a greater impact. The snare drum became much more powerful without destroying the cymbals with too much compression. The G4000 #2 seemed to emphasize the top end too much, which made the cymbals a bit harsh. I think I'm going to replace all the FCs on G4000#2.

Also, I have some extra 2180LBs that I'm trying to sell... I'll post in the Black Market.

And I'll also post some guts of the two units in a day or two. Of the 4 G4000s I've built, the one with the WIMAs and DBX 202s is my favorite !!!

Thanks again Gyraf !!!

yup i find that FCs are too harsh also. I changed mine to Nichicon PW, which turned it a little dark but smoooooth. try the HE series. i use those in my channelstrips and they are smooth but not as dark.

Here's a picture of the final two units happy as can be !!!

Greg, did you open up those meters and change the scale? I think I have similar Weston meters, and on the back they say "Sealed - do not open." I guess i could just be super hard core and just read microamps...

Mike: I didn't open the meters. These are sealed as well and I figure if I left them sealed they'd probably still be working after I'm dead, so why mess with a good thing. The downside is that they're not illuminated and I can't set up a scale in dB. But they are so easy to read I can live without the illumination. And I set them up at 6dB full deflection so I know what the scale is in dB, it just doesn't say it. These meters are great, though. The ballalistics are awesome. Fast and smooth.
