Hey guys,

I have access to loads of NOS Telefunken EF86 and GE JAN 6072A tubes. I also have a Cinemag CM-2480 transformer.

Which do you guys think would sound better?

Buying an Apex 460 + Peluso CEK12 $475 shipped to Australia and modding the mic as per this site http://www.allthisnoise.com/All_This_Noise/Apex_mod.html

OR

Using my SP C1 as a donor mic and building a Gyraf G7 with a Peluso CEK12 capsule.

Cost aside, which would you choose?

I bought a used 460 for $120 (they are $180 new) a RK-12 capsule from microphone-parts.com for $90 and a $10 JAN NOS 12AT7.  The capsule made a tremendous difference,  the mic is, dare I say, smoother.  The tube made some difference in gain but I can't be sure if it made the mic sound better.  All in all way beter than stock,  I like the mic so much I am going to stop there with mods and find another Apex 460 for stereo duties.  ChrisP

plenty of apex mods I have a whole pdf on the subject including transformer replacement and circuit redesign removing the cathode follower. If you really want to c12 it remove the cathode follower, new transformer, and a 12ay7 tube. the capsule is not bad depending on what you get as there is a variance in capsules and their sonics with the apex 460's Hell replace the capsule too and you got a poor mans c12

I do have an RCA 12AY7 tube from the 1960s so this may be a possibility.

And the T14/1 tran is cheap if you choose C12......I just DIY ed( & I mean DIY ed its in a cat food can) a studio projects TB1 ( C12 ish circuit Im told) with a real T14/1 from 60s & 60s 6072a tube, not 12 ish capsule tho but with a blue type lollypop head......sounds good
