Why are things so bad right now? Instability, division, war, inequality etc.?

In fact this is nothing new, and there exist underlying patterns and mechanisms operating on very long time frames. These can be quantified and mathematically modelled, and then tested on the past and modelled on the future.

I've read this book by Peter Turchin - probably the most prominent scientist in this field of Cliodynamics - which is primarily concerned with the United States, but the underlying principles apply universally. You can download it for free here:

Fascinating read and highly recommended. Lot's of math, formulas and well-known principles like feedback in there for the engineers. ;-)

You get to see through the ideology, the partisan rationalisations and have a look at the actual underlying structure of politics and history. Understand how parameters like immigration, wages, elite size and composition form cyclical patterns and force history and politics.

I was aware of general patterns in economics, generations, innovation, but this is on a whole different level.
