Thanks for the link soundguy. I do remember coming across that thread some time ago. It seems to me that this, and correct me if I am wrong, was designed with simplicity of design and function first and foremost and not flexibilty or sound quality first - such as, "this will sound really good for how much it will cost and the amount of time it will take to build." Not exactly what I was asking about. Who has built it and compared it to other things?
I should add that I initially posed this question to PRR because I am a studio geek and have some nice toys to work with and really love the sound of some of my old comps. However, none of my super favorite comps would be cheap to build or are simple in design. At the very least, I am of the mind that Transformers are very critical to the sound of gear I like and I have come to this solid conclusion after hours of ABX listening tests with another member here "eikoow".
For example I love (!!!!) the sound of my U73 telefunken comps and RCA BA-6A and was wondering if designs of those nature had come up round here. I would not mind spending the sheckels on something that gave me similar satisfaction, nor would I mind hunting for old transformers.
And as for eq, I would love to know if anybody has ever come across the old EMI tube four-band eq's. I have seen pics. Gain makeup is performed by a pair of V72's (stereo EQ).
All the best,
