Hey Guys,

This may seem really simple, and prob should be be... but....

I'm trying to figure out how to wire up the outputs of a pre I am building to have a phase/polarity switch.

I looked at Kev's example which I found on his site for the Green Pre and still can't work it out.

Here it his pic (hope you don't mind Kev)

Here is pic of my toggle switch from behind, can anyone illustrate how to do this. I assume you tie the shields together and only switch the hot and cold around?

Also is there a preference to switching the polarity on input or output?

Thanks in advance

Matt

we seem to be having trouble posting at the moment
crash ... re load ... etc
been trying for the last few minutes and Pete has beaten me to it.
sorry Matta

look at Pete's picture
the centre two contacts are the commons that go to the PCB
the other four give you the flip
and go to pins 2 and 3
yes shields are straight through

this will work on both input and output

Preference can often be about convenience
However it is usual to try to put it on the output as it is higher ... line level and more robust than mic levels
BUT
some may choose to put it on input if they feel there is a possibility of a different tone with respect to polarity.
ClassA or asymmetrical circuits may give you this.

For an unbalanced output you have no choice but input
otherwise you need an inverting amp on the end

make sense or was that all to short ??

Thanks Kev,

It all makes sense. My only concern si that I have it the other way around in my mind, the commons going to the output XLR, so am I wrong, the commons and FROM the PCB and the lower terminals go to the XLR.

In this case I'll be using balanced outs so it will be fine on the output.

Thanks again.

Matt

" ... so it will be find on the output. "

HA HA!! I meant it will be fine on the output of the board in my case... not FIND....

In my defense it is 1.20am and I have got flux on the brain from a night of soldering, LOL

Thanks again for all the help!

Cheers

Matt
