I am genuinely curious how it sounds. It’s accidentally a perfect experiment in taking a known (relatively capable) circuit and capsule, and sticking it in a hellaciously-bad body. I wonder just how bad it sounds.

In other words how much of a mic’s “sound” comes from the body/headbasket? 25%? 50%? More?

When I first started recording 40 years ago my friend and I were micing up our drum set in my parent's basement with our Ross mixer and Fostex X-15 4-track. There was a metal waste can nearby and we had the brilliant idea to stick a mic inside because we both read the cool stories of unusual mic placement from the magazines. It was a comically bad idea, and we laughed about our "boom can" experiment for years.

This mic reminds me of the "boom can".

I think all of us microphone enthusiasts have done crazy experiments with different enclosures, objects, spaces.

I also think that most people have already built unusual microphones. I once built a capsule into a peanut tin 😅 . We should start a dedicated thread for our best freak mics, that should be fun.😂

We probably all built an intercom for the front door decades ago.
Everyone used a box as futuristic as possible, of different shapes, sizes, with holes, slits, screens. The speaker also had the role of a microphone.
It sounded funny.
And we were fashionable, young and happy.😁
