@Wordsushi, thanks for the featuring! :D
The TL Sphere is made by 797 audio, not Feilo tho.

Here's the T.Bone mic against sm57. Red one is T.Bone.

Dude, your insightful breakdowns and analysis are one of my favorite aspects of this forum, especially all the Sphere stuff you've done. Thank you for the 797 correction. That TBone v. 57 comparison really is kinda eye opening. I hope you will get a chance to tear apart an SD-1 at some point because I'd really like to know your opinion on what UA may have done to upgrade it from the OEM stock version. I honestly have no interest in the mic as a mic, but UA's move into the mic biz, and the kinda clumsy way they're going about it just really fascinates me.

Well, that's either "clumsy", or just "not investing too-too much, in order to limit potential losses if it flops"

And then again, "a penny saved is a penny earned"...

That's really strange because they are making great products, the best plugin emulations around, great soundcards, strange that they went into the cheap mic bussiness

I’m super curious to see how good the Bock stuff is. Seems like David wouldn’t put his name on something compromised in quality. Notice how the upcoming 251/67/87 clones have his name but the others didn’t…
That being said, everyone has a price!

Good question. And I may have somewhat of an answer.

So in the process of reading through all the different forums and sources to feed my weird fascination with all the UA mic stuff, it came to light that the UA Bock Series mics are essentially the same as the pre-UA Bock mics. Drew from UA said David Bock made some small circuit changes to make the mics fully ROHS compliant and that nothing was changed in the audio path, and capsules and transformers are the same. And they're all still hand built by David and his team. So, the conclusion is that the new ones sound just like the old ones. He is apparently also consulting with Chris Townsend on future Sphere projects, according to Drew. And as his name was nowhere near the SD-1 or SP-1, those are just OEM mics from China.

And since the old ones are the same as the new ones, you can really just go to AudioTestKitchen.com and compare the 251 and U195 to their competition. I made a video doing that on my channel, but I'm not enough of a shameless whore to post it here.

What's insane is that according to Futuresource, a company that has been doing pro audio consumer market analysis for companies like Shure for years, an astonishing 2 out of every 5 people across the globe identify as "content creators" with over 40 million people around the world identifying as audio-only content creators. How absolutely bat crap insane is that? I can't even wrap my head around that. How can it be so many people? So, blame this explosive growth of the prosumer/streamer/podcaster demographic who now account for more than half of the aggregate audio gear sales. Thanks to the pandemic, this group spent 75% more money on their passion projects in 2020 compared to 2019, so if like me, you feel like this UA move feels rushed and desperate, it's because it very well may be trying to play catch up. Crazy stuff.

Makes sense. I really like the original Soundeluxe U99.

With the slowdown in sales of Universal's own La2a and 1176, it's not surprising that they jumped into microphones at both the high end and low end of the price/quality range. I'm sure their biggest growing market is the home recording/ZOOM/podcasting world, so the low-end mics will compete well there and the Bock name has good cred so it will appeal to the more professional/monied crowd. Does UAD processing support the Townsend modeling software? If so, that is a brilliant partnership with a huge potential for expansion.

BTW, do any of you DSP guys out there have a feeling about how long UAD will stick with their current SHARC architecture?

With the way processors are going, do you think there will be a need / market for DSP in the future?

Whenever CPU/GPU processors gain performance, the plugin and DAW demands also go up, so I think external DSP options will continue to be viable. Additionally, recording with plugin-based emulations seems to be very popular, so UAD and Antelope will undoubtedly continue to create proprietary DSP-based hardware/software solutions.

As an aside, I work with Sonarworks (the room correction software company) and we have recently released hardware-embedded implementations of our SoundID software product in partnership with speaker, headphone, and interface manufacturers. Offshoring the DSP load helps control for latency and performance and also hides some of the mess from the user.

Just saw the NOS12 modeling microphone youtubes.
I only saw one output, so is the modeling EQ only?

Cool! This is an idea i was hesitant to share. I modded Slate ML1 VMS from solid state to tube. I even thought about doing the same to Townsend Labs Sphere. Not that it makes any sense, just to add "true tube sound" to the emulations LoL 🤣
