this time we are taking a 1000 turn coil and placing it over a square stack of 3 different alloys,

these alloys were the input lams for the V72, the output lams for the V72, and Super Q lams from Mag Metals. All three lams tested are EI types with very close cross sections, the V72 are metric and the 625 is English, but they only differ in size by a few microns,

results were surprising in that we expected max perm from the Mag Metals Super Q,

but it actually had a lower perm than the V72 input transformer lams,

Super Q had a perm closer to the V72 output lams, however, at 10 hz and with a 5 volt input level, where max flux was expected, both V72 input and output lams went into saturation, where as the Super Q stood tough, you can see this by the lower perm and inductance figures,

Why did the Super Q not saturate?

they add Cobalt to the alloy, which stiffens up the bass, so you start with an 80 Ni alloy, and add Cobalt, this lowers the perm but gives better bass response,

AL factor and Perm are related in a linear fashion so i left out the AL values for brevity,

numbers here, sse that 10 Hz normally produces the most perm except when saturation occurs, >

data was backed up by a trip to the Mag Met website where we found a graph for the Super Q alloy, here is how Super Q stacks up against 49 Ni and 80 Ni, see tyat Super Q has less perm than 80 Ni,

http://www.magmet.com/lamination/materials.php

Mag Net advertises low distortion for the Super Q, i guess at the price of reduced perm, that flat line is why you get less distortion, perm does not change with flux as with the other 2 alloys, i would expect to see a square BH loop for the Super Q.>

here is a pic of the lams used, left is the V72 output, middle is the uber cool lookin V72 input, and right is the Mag Met Super Q.

that pearl like finish, according to Ollie over at Funkenwek, is achieved by a special shot blasting process, why they do this, i forgot, possibly used just to get a smoother finish so they can stack more lams in the same area, never seen another lam like it,

V72 output lam on the left almost looks like a Cadmium plating,
