hi!

Further to my searches on the H@A@M@P@T@O@N@E pre, I am trying to find any info relating to John Linsey Hood's "Liniac" pre-amp, originally published in Wireless World in 1971(ish). Google turns up nothing of any real use.

Any Help greatfully recieved!

There's a document retrieval service for that magazine although I don't know if it goes back that far. I've used it a couple of times and it is a bit pricey although they send you decent hard copy promptly in the post.

bcarso,

sounds very interesting! i thought that might be the case, but i turned up nothing in a search. Do you have any further details vv Wireless World Archive?

Many thanks,

ANdyP

They don't appear to go back that far directly, although there is an article from 1990 by JLH about preamps from 1960 on, "#1 Development of preamplifiers from 1960 to the present day. June 1990, p505"

This was from their index, searching starting with audio as the category. The link:

Anyone even heard of it?

I remember Someone waxing lyrical about it in days of yore, Roger Quested perhaps? Could be a gem for the likes of us if the scemo or original article Wireless World (Sept 1971) could be found . . .

original article Wireless World (Sept 1971)

I can have a look but I'm afraid it'll be after my holidays... just two days ago I was near the library of another department at work where they have (at least had) all older years. It'll be a while before I'll be there again, but if you haven't found it by second half of August then give me a yell.

Regards,

Peter

Peter,

That would be fantastic! i promise not to hassle you (too much . . . ) If nothing else turns up, I'll give you a nudge towards the end of August, if you don't mind.

Have yourself a wonderful holiday, wherever you take it.

All the best,

No problem, just remind me. I'll likely be thinking about it myself when I go there again, but just give me that nudge.
Since they're almost completely reorganizing that campus I do hope though that they haven't 'refreshed' their cabinets - some people throw such stuff away - strange habit.

I wasn't aware of any relation between these designs; how did you found that ?

Have yourself a wonderful holiday, wherever you take it.
Thanks ! If you arrange some nice/acceptable weather in Scotland we'll be enjoying ! :thumb:
And if you're going, have a good holiday as well.

Bye,

Interesting on the PW Texan !!!

I don't have the original Linsley-Hood article but i used his "Liniac" in some designs back at the time it was published.
Here is front-end part of a preamp using the said circuit, hope it gives a pretty good idea of it.

I don't guarantee component values as i really don't remember if this is what worked correctly in the end. I just pulled this from my old design sketch block.

Dear All,

Wow! All of yiou are so damn helpful!

Clintrubber, the comparison was made by AP on this forum. Has anyone heard anything from him recently? I think he is called Alan and from Milton Keynes. He posted loads about the hAMPTONE last summer, and I haven't found anything since . . .

uk03878, thanks for your stirling efforts.

vacuumvoodoo, great, thanks! That'll certainly help me to start with.

I've found a reference to the actual issue: Wireless World, September
1971, page 437. But I don't have that issue and I don't know anyone, off
hand, who does. You could try a large public library, they sometimes
took WW and may have kept back issues. Or there's university libraries.

Otherwise, it's a free want ad. in PW, asking for a copy of the article.

Or you could ask in rec.antiques.radio+phono. There are some fans of JLH
who post there.

Okay,

From the dusty shelves of L'pool Central Library:

>SNIP<- PDF available now. If anyone wants the original files, e-mail me.

5 pages of hi-res 200dpi JPEG scans (I know... but my scanner software won't let me export GIF) of photocopies of original September '71 WW article. Watch out 56k'ers, these are 0.5MB each!

...I was in their "magazine vault" anyway researching some old Norman Crowhurst articles and remembered to write down this article too!

If someone could do the old pdf thing, I'd be most grateful. And if anyone can host the pdf file too it'd be cool- my wanapoo space doesn't take a lot of abuse! I'll keep this up for a few days, and then host the pdf...

(wanapoo's idea of a webserver must be a room of FDD's connected to the internet by a strand of spaghetti...)

Interesting article- I can see a nod to it in the Hamptone.
