trying to find hard copy (books) of mic construction, capsule, ect. without getting to technical (i know there is alot of technical stuff, but i just want to experiment, and not have to read 300 pages of Physics). if thats possible.

please post any info you know of!

thanks!

The best single, easy to read source would be the microphone Meta in this forum . There are no books specifically about how to build microphones. There are a few very technical papers around.

thanks tim, glancing thru the Meta, it just seemed like you needed to know a good bit before understanding the info. i was thinking about starting a bit lower.
stumbled across this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=3753796188&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT

think it might be usefull?

Yes, Olson s elements. I have read it and I love it very much.
I want it very much.
But I am too young to have credit card.
And shipping from United Kingdom to the Czech are also not cheep?
(posibbly bigger than book price ?)
Can anybody help me to buy it?
Or somebody to buy it and scan it to PDF?

I'll second that. Tim is absolutely right! Although any, more or less serious book will have some bits (very little) of information, you won't find such a wealth of information anywhere, except of Meta. The most important thing--everything that has been posted here comes from the most invaluable resourse--personal experience. Even if this information sounds to you little bit too technical, try to get into it. If along the way you have any questions--just post.

Oh yeah, you don't expect Olson to be "easy, bedtime reading", don't you?

Yes, there are only books how to design microphones.
Path from design (on the paper, or computer) to real mic is looooong.
And no literature about it. It is factory secret.

For me, Olson is god for reading when you are waiting for a train.
It is hard to sleep after reading Olson.

In terms of building your own mic capsule, following the Debenham design is a good place to start, I think. There are drawings in there and it's really not all that hard to build. In terms of understanding the mechanics of a capsule, it takes a lot of diddling around, experience, experimentation, and if you can understand the physics of it, everything makes a lot more sense. Mostly, it takes time and patience. I'd start by reading every thread in the microphone meta a few times to absorb everything a bit.

If no-one else is buying it, I will buy it and scan the good bits! Might take a few weeks to get all the scanning done. Let me know what you decide to do.

Very little of this stuff seems to get out of America ( logical ). I would certianly be up to making a contribution to the costs of making / hosting PDF's.

I'm very sorry, but what the seller says about this book is BS. 80% of the chapters talk about notes, scales, music instruments etc. There are 11 pages about mics - they contain a pic for every transducer type and a few lines general description.

If someone really want's this 11 pages, I'll scan them, but don't expect too much from them...

Still, it would be nice (if possible) to have those 11 pages around - if not for anything else, then for knowing that this is not the magical resource that we really really need to be able to build microphones..

asm,
Most of the microphone Meta is written in straightforward, non-technical terms. If this is too hard for you maybe you should think about beginning with a book like Neumann's Microphone book available from their website.

Here we go:

BTW, I just check Howard Tremaine's "Audio Cyclopedia", it has an informative and rather longish chapter about mics. I love the wireless tube receiver schemo!

good show Samuel,

I seem to remember that only a couple weeks back New York Dave
posted a link to large Olsen PDF file. Did anyone get it ? I thought I
down loaded it but apparantly not.

xvlk and others would enjoy that.

Lance

you might want to take that link down the book because of copyrights. I hope you think of protecting this place and googling next time
