Hi!

Im experimenting alot with the 2264, 33609 circuit... I think I tried most things out by now :) ...but If I would like to round off transients from drums, or add distortion...
would lower Hfe values maybe help? Ive seen people use it in fuzz pedals etc... Im thinking about the BC214s in the input signal path

I don't know what 2264s or 33609s are, but low beta (hfe) bipolar transistors generally have higher noise.

The gain in each transistor gain stage can be adjusted by changing the resistor network around them without changing the resistors. John will be able to explain it better, or pick up an old Transistor text book form the 60's or 70's. It will explain all of that.

With what you are trying, why aren't you looking at the 2254 instead? I would think that would fit your bill better to begin with... Or an RFZ V713 or Siemens U273.

For sure, would love to try a 2254, I have 2 of the 2264 Neve compressors and a 33609 C, and I love them... but its always nice to see what can be done, I have been messing around with transformers, op- amps etc and now I like the sound out of them... but still could be fun to see what else to do to make them saturate or distort peaks, just bring the noise I dont care  ...low hfe... slew rate...
