M-Audio 2626. Dead MOSFET in an SOIC package. What to look for before I just replace it?

I was getting a dead short when I'd plug in the 12V power supply. I measured 3ohms across the first cap in the power supply. I checked all diodes and pulled out of circuit several electrolytics. I was about to give up on this thing. Then I measured some shorts across what looked like an op-amp. Of course there'd not be likely an op-amp in a power supply section. So I looked it up and it's a MOSFET. Turns out Drain to Source is shorted.

These are kind of expensive. With shipping I'd be around $15-20. I'm tempted to just fit something through hole onto the board. Or maybe look a little more for a compatible SOIC that's cheaper.

But before I just replace, I have no idea what this could be doing. Is there something past this that is likely to have killed it? I pulled it out of circuit and now lights are coming on. So this seems to be the issue.
