hi i'm Paolo, I just completed my first ssl clone one week ago and since then i tried to solve a problem with the make up gain wich is not giving me enough gain when threshold goes all the way ccw...
I'm a real newbie at diy and i read all the topics in this thread but a couldn't find an answer to this problem so i decide to post this request of help.

thanks to anyone who will help

paolo

p.s.: sorry for my english..

i'm very happy tho hear that !! what a relief i was testing all the resistors and all the voltages, and were right so i hadn't a clue of what was the mistake..

thank you patrik and jakob

this forum is great!! :guinness:

Hey Guys

I think I am having the same 'problem'. I just completed my first SSL Comp and when the Threshold is fully CCW even with the Makeup Gain fully CW I don't get sufficient Makeup Gain and the meter is reading out at the Max, so over 20db Gain Reduction, this lowers as I increase the Threshold CW, until when maxed CW it shows no Gain reduction. I assume this is typical on this comp? Audibly it sounds fine, just want to make sure the meter is correct and to clarify the make up issue (though I think that is cleared up).

Thanks

Matt

Thanks Dr Pat,

That all makes sense and I'll sleep better now. You are def. right about that meter pegging at low thresholds!

I did noticed something weird with my GSSL and the meter reading. I used a 47K LIN Pot in place of the recommended 50K LIN, and in all actuality it only measured around 44K, so this might contribute to the below effect.

I feed in a 200HZ Sin Wave @ 0dB through my Pro Tools rig, balanced into the GSSL. Now if my theory is correct on the 50K pot half way up should be around 0dB on the meter, but yet on mine I only 0db on the meter at around 3/4 of the way up CW.

Is this due to the fact that I used a 47K (44K) pot instead of a 50K pot? And if I could get hold on a 50K pot would this then correct the in balance so that at half way up the meter read 0dB? Or is there another way round this to calibrate the meter to the 47K pot?

Thanks

Matt

Sorry,

I wasn't clear on that. The Threshold pot. The make up pot does nothing to the meter at all, just the Threshold pot.

My meter only reads 0db at 3/4 CW on the Threshold feeding it 0db signal from PT, but as far as I know 1/2 way up the pot should give me a 0db reading with a 0db signal?

Cheers

Matt

Hey DrPat,

The meter reads at 0dB all the way to the left, so in effect when the
Threshold is fully CW (+20dB on the panel) and there is no reduction which
is illustrated by the needle being all the way to to left at 0db on the
meter, but moving from the the +20dB Threshold CCW the needle stars to show
gain reduction when the Threshold is about 1/4 of the way down, on the front
panel this would be at the +10db. Not at 0dB, which I think should be at
around 1/2 way on the Threshold pot.

So my concern is why is the Threshold kicking in compression at what on the
front panel looks like +10db not 0db even when fed a 0db signal?

Is something wrong with my meter calibration? I am using a 1mA DC meter and
the 2K resistor for the meter and the VCA?s are THAT 2180LB, I just left off
the trimmer on each channel, everything else was built as per the parts
overlay.

Thanks again for all the help. Ps I stopped by your site, damn there is some
nice gear there! Not to mention the credit list and your bio... O do you
really need that Limo ;-)

Cheers

Matt
