I have looked in every data sheet I can find, and I can not find how much capacitance I can put for the first filter stage and get decent tube life.

Are there any rules of thumb for this, I have noticed quite a few rectifier data sheets ignore this info.

I'm wrong. The rating is 2.2 Amps peak plate current. You can figure this with Duncan Power Supply Designer.
 
if the cap is too big, you can arc weld the plates of the 5y3.
never done it, hoping every day to see it in person.

semiconductor stuff is so boring when it pops.
but tubes, you usually get your money's worth.


they have charts and graphs for filter selection, but mostly for people who wanna know how cheap they can go.

Putting resistance between rectifier and first cap is ugly math.
